Publication 1: Sustainable Construction for Community Buildings and Village Halls: A Guide to 21st Century Building (2nd Edition, February 2002)

by Steve Charter (MA), with John Shore (Dip AA) and Julian Brooks, October 2000.

If you are going to build, extend or renovate a community building or village hall numerous examples show that you can easily make it beautiful and functional whilst also costing half as much to run (in heating, lighting and water use, etc.) by designing it to be at least twice as efficient as a normal hall. This popular guide, now in its second edition, tells you how to achieve this. It has been designed to be used particularly (but not only) by:

  • Community groups and local authority officers involved with commissioning a community building
  • Village Hall Committees
  • Architects and design / project teams
  • Community development workers, NGO project officers, etc. involved in advising on new community buildings

This guide features information on:

  • design for ultra-low running costs
  • design for energy and water efficiency
  • use of local materials, environment friendly building products and local labour

The contents include:

  • General Information on Sustainable Construction for Community Buildings
  • Guidance Note 1: New Build
  • Guidance Note 2: Renovation and Refurbishment
  • Guidance Note 3: A Guide to Environmentally Good Materials and Products
  • Guidance Note 4: A Simple Checklist for Sustainable Design and Construction
  • Guidance Note 5: Useful Information and Contacts
  • Guidance Note 6: Good Practise Examples of Sustainable Buildings
  • Guidance Note 7: Criteria for Funding Support
  • Sustainable Building Design Report by John Shore
  • Appendices and Glossary of Terms

Price: £15.00 including post and packaging

Publication 2: Planning for Sustainable Construction (January 2001)

By Steve Charter (MA, Environmental Planning)

This report draws on innovative approaches through which the planning system can address sustainable construction in a more proactive way than it might think possible. It identifies the hooks in planning national guidance that allow policy and DC planners to move the sustainability agenda forward in a comprehensive and consistent way. It addresses the role of Local Plan Policies and statements of intent; Development Briefs for key sites; Supplementary Planning Guidance on sustainable construction; the role of Voluntary Sustainable Housing Standards. It provides a range of hugely useful information: indications of model policies that can be used or adapted to the local situation; draft Voluntary Sustainable Housing Standards.

Price: £20.00, including post and packing - please state whether you require printed or floppy-disk versions.
